a coach was showing me some basic pommel horse stuff.  i was wearing some shorts that i had actually bought that very day.  the shorts caught on the pommel horse and i heard a tearing sound, although i didn't actually see a rip.

are you supposed to wear a special kind of pants or shorts on the pommel horse?

any recommended brands?

do i need to wear skin tight pants?  i'd REALLY prefer not to and would feel really silly, but that's what i see gymnasts wearing in competitions.

The pants gymnasts wear aren't usually skin-tight, but they are tight enough that there is no bagginess: any loose fabric can easily get caught. You could wear:

- tight pants (the kind gymnasts wear works well)

- tights/leggings

- short shorts

- a speedo

- nothing

- booty shorts

I'd recommend the first ;)

Well, for floor, this is just impractical.

Yeah, that's one place you don't want to get whiplash.

are there any recommended brands?

why do these pants have these slots where your feet go in? wouldn't these get worn out very quickly when doing some tumbling?

see attached photo in the link.

any difference between competition pants and the training ones?

The ones you linked to look fine.

The pants are designed for the aerial events. On floor and vault, competitors generally wear shorts.

They also make a very satisfying 'swish' on pommel horse in particular :)

in that case, i'll probably just buy non-gymnastic pants, as i would like to have all-purpose clothes i can use for all my skill training.

i guess the main thing is just to pick pants that are not baggy, since you mentioned that any loose fabric can get caught in the pommel horse.

No pockets.

These just get caught especially on regrabbing tge pommel.

A pair of karate gi pants works well for the most part. Shorts can work but you want a material that will move smoothly against the horse during straddle swings. You also want them long enough your skin isnt rubbing alongside the body of the horse. Most gym shorts are quite short, like track shorts.

blairbob,

i had just shown up to gymnastics practice with some daisy dukes when i saw your post.  all the 6 year olds were laughing at me.  haha, just kidding.

i actually practiced martial arts for years (i don't practice any more).  unfortunately, i gave away all my gi's a couple of years ago.

the gi pants were an excellent suggestion.  and i just bought 3 pairs of gi pants.  hopefully, they fit alright after drying (they shrink a lot the first time you dry them).

:D  Only in Europe! B-)

Not true! At least no one under the age of 40 wears them anymore, and I'm thankful for that. Though I have seen some frightful sights in yoga classes. Maybe that's why I switched to GST.

In any case, Blair pretty well summed it up. Pockets just don't work well in gymnastics, too easy to catch your hands on them.
