Jacob Marks
CoachDo you feel that their are specific excercise that are essential to learning a quality kip on high bar, Currently I am working HLL progressions, front lever pulls, V-hold slide to hanging candle hollow. We also do many single leg drop kips. Any input from this forum is always greatly appreciated!!Respectfuly Jacob Marks
Blairbob
Not exactly sure, but I've found one of the first things I focus on for the glide kip is merely the ability to hold the L and V shapes. Then it's a matter of being able to hold them while moving. Preferably I would teach most of my guys a glide kip on a single rail before the long hang kip on HB in L5. One of the biggest issues with the LH kip on HB is too much swing being generated (they tap) and not reversing the direction of the swing ( extend hips out, pull toes back to bar ). If a gymnast can L-hang to V on bar, they are more than strong enough to kip. Many kids who kip can hardly do a straight HLL toes to bar. It really can be about timing. I still like to build the strength their first as it allows them to learn the kip very fast once they understand the technique (and if they are patient and work hard). Just my 2 cents. Bare in mind, I coached in the WAG program before MAG so that's where I come from regarding the bar kip. And yes, I work a lot of spotted drop kips. Single leg drop kips? Is this like a stride/mill circle?
Jacob Marks
Yes, I do these for a repitition standpoint. I have asked this question to a lot of people.1.Tammy Biggs says you needs 20 leg lifts and a pike open front on floor2.Steve Butcher says 10 Leg lifts and single leg kip then kip3.Coaching friend does ton of straight arm pull down work4.If you watch china kip they are leg lift fanatics!5.Some people spot the kip from day one till level 6 some drill leg lifts and single leg kips without spot6.For boys its not a super important skill to develop there are none really in optionals unlike womens,Just would like to come up with a solid recipe but i know that one will not work for all kids
