Aerial progression

I would like to start working toward aerial cartwheels, willing to work on my cartwheel fist if I need it. This is where I'm at right now, with a regular cartwheel followed by a dive cartwheel.

Any errors I need to correct first? What should my next step be?

If you can keep your legs more separated, that would probably help.

Other than that, your cartwheels are fine.

Have you seen Juji's Aerial tutorial? It's good. He throws one arm over the side of his body, but I like to make it seem like I'm reaching towards the ground instead of going over.

Basically the progression from cartwheel to aerial is... jumping and kicking. Hah, it is really that simple. There's no need for a spotter or anything, it's just a cartwheel in the air. That, and even if you fail, your hands are still around to protect you.

Oh, and I disagree with one arm cartwheels being prerequisites. Maybe one arm if you use the opposite arm (in this case, your left arm), but other than that, I think not.

I learned by trying to do cartwheels without hands. There really is no importance in learning another way. (my theory)

It's hard to tell which CW is which. In the first CW, you are diving on your hands, and just more so in your dive CW.

A near one arm CW isn't that difficult or that much of a step to a side aerial. But you need to know how to do a CW on both sides, especially on one arm (your bad arm) which is your far arm. It's because the one arm far arm CW requires you to sort of hop over to it like a dive CW.

I would not work the aerial from a run. If anything I would use a step hurdle or step. For some drills for side aerial, I only let them use a lunge starting in a lunge instead of a step.

Continue with the dive cartwheel where your hands land all the way turned over.

I actually throw my arms out to the side in the side aerial because it's the only way I wouldn't try to reach for the floor and balk. If I used a different method for the arms, like the underarm swing wrap into chest I could just reach for the floor.

You can also use a russian lift where you extend your shoulders behind and up. Shoulder extension is like a german hang or the bottom of a skin the cat. This works too since there is no way you can reach for the floor/ground.

The keys to the aerial is kicking over the top with the lead leg and getting your chest down to your thigh in the lunge leg with the rear leg following. Oh, and committing. Oh, and you have to push off that lunge leg. As with many skills, most don't finish the rear kick or pushing off the lunge.
