He is making hard work of those, but then I guess he is pretty heavy.

i believe he walks around 15 pounds heavier when hes not fighting so im guessing 185 but they are pretty fast. is that considered kipping the way he does them?

Quick Start Test Smith

Makes you wonder how good he would be if he had been trained like a gymnast by Coach Sommer for a few years...

Yeah that's kipping

This is no kipping

But this video of me doing slow muscle up still has too much forward lean.

Coach said (correct me if wrong Coach) gymnastics movements like Muscle Ups develops shoulder girdle strength. My guesse is the reason he's doing it is that in fighting you use your shoulders for hitting and such. Developing a higher strength in this area will help in his fights. What you guys think?

A+ to GSP.

Agreed!

His sport is MMA, you don't ask a gymnast to step into a ring but doesn't mean they can't adopt some concepts that a fighter uses. I'm glad GSP adopted some gymnastics movements, there's a reason why he is respected and one of the most well rounded fighters.

He´s not so strong... :|

I doubt u'd think that if you were in the ring with him!

Obviously doesn't train this way but just using it as a small bit of cross training. Cool to see tho, I;m a big fan of GSP.

I find it really odd that he can do an L-sit, and yet his 360 pull is very sloppy. I can't get even close to an l-sit (even a tuck one on the floor is hard) and yet can do flat tuck 360 pulls rather fine.

Because it's not entirly corelated. Maybe he is just slopy and strong enough to do it correctly.

I;m a big fan as well. I'm surprised to see him having so much trouble, but for all we know he has already been at it for 2 hours. This could be at the end of the day after sparring and all sorts of other stuff, so it's hard to judge. He's a strong guy, but if you don't train the transition you will always look funny doing muscle ups, even if you've got ridiculous weighted dips and pull ups.

Everyone is just different too, I find it insane that you can full lay 360 pull and not do an L sit, my 360 pull is only advanced tuck but I can L sit on the floor for 60s, its a mystery of life. (and my comparatively weaker lower back).

Obviously if I got in the ring with GSP he would kill me easily... Do not be naive, do not let your fanaticism blind you, you understood what I meant when I said he was not that strong ... or do you think he can do a full front lever, full planche and OACs?

Maybe your abs are much weaker than your lats ad shoulders.

That may be the case, but I wouldn't say that my abs are weak as I can do a standing ab wheel rollout. I'm thinking that my pressing strength isn't good enough and my hips are too tight, or something.

That is all true. Some of my friends can't do even a single pull-up, and yet they're pretty strong otherwise. Limb length could be the key, too. I'm 187cm tall and my legs make up 127cm of that, so it could also be a case of a real disadvantaged lever ;)

There is now quite a lot more footage of him online using gymnastics for strength training and conditioning. The latest one posted shows him doing cast wall walks, and it appears to be using them for a conditioning circuit, so the form is not perfect. Nevertheless, it seems that it is a welcome part of his training for a tough MMA fight.

Also, there was some more of the coverage of this training, and some commentary by the gymnastics coach, on the Spike show about the upcoming fight. I think it was Episode 2.

You´re right everyone is different. I think the secret is finding out your weak links and focus a little bit more on those. My problem is understanding/finding out where I have my weak links. Some of my weak links cleared up during the seminar at Mallorca.
