Between typing on keyboards, texting on cell phones, and driving in cars, our forearms, wrists, shoulders, upper backs, and elbows take a beating. We become chronically round-shouldered, immobile, unhealthy, and weak … perhaps without even realizing it.
How do we balance our daily dysfunction and take the first step to mastering a handstand? We begin with simple wrist stretches. Wrist stretches are absolutely necessary not only as the first step in handstand preparation for weekend warriors or competitive athletes but for all desk jockey adults. We begin very gently with wrist stretches in all directions, (something we all need desperately whether we realize it or not). Wrist stretches and wrist push-ups are necessary to prepare tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue for not only handstands but also for the rigors of life in the computer age.
Shoulder Prep
Next, it is important to focus on your shoulders, to prevent rotator cuff impingement and injury and to increase longevity and the ease with which we complete daily tasks, like putting on a jacket without worrying if we can extend enough to get our arms through!
It’s All About The Line
To follow, we will train bodyline drills that focus on proper body alignment to keep your joints stacked vertically on top of one another to maximize your balance (think about your handstand like a stacked Jenga: the better the stack, the greater the balance).
No arched-back (aka banana back) handstands that reinforce poor technique and muscular imbalances are allowed here at Gymnasticbodies.
True Core
Finally, we will methodically prepare your core to handle the challenge and cool factor of being inverted. Think lots of planks, V-ups, and more fascinating six-pack popping strength. This core strength, paired with your sophisticated handstand body alignment position, and your handstand will be rock solid.
